Your Course Options
This 4 hour assessment checks if you have the necessary personal powerboat driving skills and knowledge to enable you to take the RYA Powerboat Instructor course. A solid standard of driving, seamanship and personal knowledge is needed, with assessment based around the RYA PBL2 syllabus.
Pre-Requisites: before attending this assessment, you should be confident you can helm to the standard required, outlined in the RYA Power Schemes Instructor Handbook (G19) and on the RYA website
Health Declaration: All RYA Instructors are required to sign a health declaration to ensure they have sufficient medical fitness to carry out their duty of care. Further details can be obtained from the RYA website
Minimum age: 16+
Duration: 4 hours
Session Times: 1300-1700
Maximum Teaching Ratio: 6:1
Boats Used: Typically centre console RIBs with 50-60hp outboards
Cost: £100
Powerboat Preparation Morning add on: on the morning of the Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment we offer this as an optional add on. Come along for 3 hours (from 0915-1215) to get familiar with the equipment and environment. This session is led by either the RYA Powerboat Trainer or an experienced RYA Powerboat Instructor. Cost: £40. Select the add on when you book your RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment below. Unfortunately it is not able to be booked independently.
Included in the cost of the course:
- All specialist kit (buoyancy aid, helmet, dinghy equipment)
Additional items you will need to bring:
- RYA Power Schemes Instructor Handbook (G19)
- Suitable kit & footwear to be in a powerboat in the given conditions
- Refreshments (minimum water bottle)

This 3-day course is an informative and enjoyable introduction into the role of the Powerboat Instructor, where you will learn and practice effective methods and techniques needed to successfully plan, deliver and review sessions within the RYA Powerboat Level 1 and RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses.
Pre-Requisites: RYA Powerboat Skills Assessment (completed within 12 months of course start date), RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA Safe & Fun Safeguarding, RYA Membership (a valid RYA membership number will be required for the end of the course). A recognised first aid qualification will need to be obtained and maintained prior to fulfilling the RYA Instructor role.
Assessment: continual assessment, with moderation on the final day with a second, independent Trainer
Health Declaration: All RYA Instructors are required to sign a health declaration to ensure they have sufficient medical fitness to carry out their duty of care. Further details can be obtained from the RYA website
