We provide all the specialised kit needed for watersports activities, with a full range of buoyancy aids and helmets available. For Trevassack Lake activities there is a range of wetsuits available.

A full list of items to bring will be in the course joining instructions. As a guide, the following is a general list for our sailing and multi-activity courses:

  • swimwear (to wear under a wetsuit)
  • shoes that can get wet and won’t fall off
  • a windproof jacket
  • a filled water bottle
  • a change of clothes and a towel
  • a sense of adventure!

Helford River only: In addition to the kit mentioned above, we recommend that a wetsuit is worn (unfortunately, we are unable to provide wetsuits for Helford River activities)

For the majority of our courses, you don’t need to be able to swim. We ask all students taking part in the watersports courses to be ‘water-confident’ (where you are comfortable out of your depth with a personal floatation device). For all our activities with the exception of wild swimming, we provide either a buoyancy aid or lifejacket which will aid with floatation should you enter the water. In addition, all our activities are overseen by qualified staff providing safety cover should it be required.

We keep a very close eye on weather conditions, and where we feel the conditions are too challenging or could affect the safety of the sessions, there are a number of options we explore. We do not typically cancel or reschedule youth sessions, as there is always something fun we can do to develop confidence and progress learning.

In other cases, depending on the weather and the course, we will review the course content with safety and learning in mind.

Sometimes in inclement weather…there is no better place to be than in or on the water!

Where minimum session numbers have not been met, we will do our best to integrate your booking onto a similar session, transfer the booking or find another solution to ensure that you have an enjoyable experience. Either way, we will always discuss options with you.

All of our instructional staff are fully trained, DBS certified and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualified where appropriate. We take the training of staff seriously and ensure they are experienced and equipped to provide a safe learning environment.

The Children’s Sailing Trust maintains Royal Yachting Association (RYA) & Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) recognition, and has active safeguarding procedures in place to ensure that children and vulnerable adults are safe on and off the water during our sessions.
