Open Doors Article | Accessible Adventures with CST

We wanted to share this lovely piece featured in Open Doors Magazine, that captures the heart of CST at Trevassack Lake so beautifully.

Access Cornwall “have developed Open Doors, a magazine created by and for students all around Cornwall who have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) and/or autism spectrum diagnoses“. There are excellent photos taken by students and of particular interest in this issue, an interview by Holly Martin (pictured above ) questioning CST Lead Instructor, Rebekah Jenkins, about the inclusivity and accessibility of our sailing programme.

Holly is a volunteer for Access Cornwall, and a Truro College student who suffered a traumatic brain injury at the age of 15. As part of her therapy to help overcome challenges with speech and mobility, Holly came to Trevassack for wild swimming lessons and sessions out in our accessible sailing dinghies. After one of her many sailing lessons, Holly interviewed Rebekah about her job with CST and the Sailability scheme. The purpose-built facilities at the lake allow for people with all mobilities and abilities to get out on the water, with experienced staff and adapted equipment including hoists to help access boats and other watercraft.

Coincidentally, on the very same day we received the article proof, our CEO caught up with Sammy Hubbard – one of our former instructors who was Rebekah’s inspiration in the article. She spoke with great pride about returning to Cornwall for the first time in seven years and seeing so many of the children she once taught to sail with CST now thriving – especially the girls, which meant a great deal to her, as she was the only female instructor among a team of older male instructors during her time with us. A wonderful full-circle moment!

It is a story that reflects the enduring impact CST has across generations. When Sammy is able to re-visit Trevassack Lake after the summer – she hasn’t seen it since we purchased the site – we will share her passion and journey through sailing with you all.
