How to get involved
Volunteering on the water at Trevassack Lake
We are looking for enthusiastic people, preferably with experience of sailing, paddlesport and/or Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) provision, to come and help enable children and young adults with additional needs to get afloat.
2026 Season
Our SEND schools will be joining us on Mondays and Tuesdays for four terms, starting after Easter. Each block of sessions will run for five weeks, the first one starting on Monday 20th April.
In the run up to the season’s start, we are providing both water and land-based training at our Trevassack Lake watersports centre.
Training
If joining us for the first time at any of these days, please come at least half an hour early so we can have a chat about we do and so we can find out a little bit about you.
On the Water Training
Tuesday 24th March 10.00 – 12.30
Monday 30th March 10.00 – 12.30
We will be running on water training for paddling, the Drascombe Lugger and powerboating, run by the Children’s Sailing Trust Activities Manager. Whilst on the water we will talk through expectations of what the volunteer role is when helping with school groups.
Accessibility (Disability awareness) training Tuesday 17th March at 14.00 (approx. 2.5 hours)
A short indoor course on broad spectrum awareness of Special Educational Needs and Disability awareness in relation to activities here at the lake.
Neurodiversity training Tuesday 31st March at 14.00 (approx. 2.5 hours)
Our land-based courses are designed to give greater understanding of working and communicating with people with additional needs and physical disabilities. Access Cornwall are experts at running courses which are useful for real world interactions.
Safeguarding Training Wednesday 25th March at 14.30 (approx. 2 hours)
We are also running safeguarding training, which teaches you not only about the dos and don’ts when working with children and vulnerable adults but also what to do if you are worried about someone you are working with. This discussion-based training is led by a former teacher with years of experience in this field.
